Cement plant cited for violations

A cement plant in Thomaston has been cited by the U.S. Department of Labor for 63 safety violations.

Dragon Products Co. LLC faces unspecified fines for the 63 violations, six of which were issued for "failure to abate previously cited hazardous conditions," according to the Bangor Daily News. Inspectors from the DOL's Mine Safety and Health Administration in November and December found missing railings and support structures needed to prevent workers from falling off the rooftop and into a roadway and retention pond. However, plant manager Ray DeGrass told the paper that all but one of the 63 violations have been resolved, and he cited the agency's increased enforcement following an explosion at a coal mine in West Virginia.

The plant, which has 230 employees, has struggled during the recession. DeGrass told the paper that "2010 was worse than 2009."
