Maine's research organizations are getting an $18 million federal grant to boost biomedical research training for students and scientists.
The National Center of Research Resources, part of the National Institutes of Health, gave the grant to Maine's IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence, or INBRE, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. INBRE is a network of 12 research laboratories, universities and colleges in the state led by the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor. The grant, awarded over five years, will fund training for more than 1,000 Maine biomedical students and support the work of 11 scientists. Overall, the grant is expected to fund the creation of 96 new full-time research and administrative positions, according to the release.
INBRE was created in 2001, and includes The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Bates, Bowdoin and Colby colleges, Southern Maine Community College, College of the Atlantic, and the University of Maine campuses in Orono, Farmington, Fort Kent, Machias and Presque Isle, according to a press release from Gov. John Baldacci's office.
