Continental pulls back at BIA

Continental Airlines yesterday told Bangor International Airport that it will stop providing service between Bangor and Newark, N.J., in June.

Continental, which operates two flights daily between Bangor and Newark, said congestion in the New York area, as well as the economic downturn and the financial performance of the flights led to the decision, according to a statement released to the Bangor Daily News. However, Continental carried about 47,000 passengers in the last year with flights being on average 74% full, according to a press release from BIA. The airline has had loads as high as 90% and increased its service to two flights per day in the last year. "It is very uncharacteristic for an airline to make this kind of cut as we approach the peak travel season," Rebecca Hupp, director of BIA, said in a statement.

Hupp said BIA has made a proposal to Continental about its service within the last month, but is still awaiting a response. Other airlines have increased flights to and from BIA for the summer, with additional flights to LaGuardia, Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis.
