$1M to rebuild roads after Irene

The Federal Highway Administration has given Maine $1 million in emergency relief funds to help rebuild roads and bridges damaged by Tropical Storm Irene.

The Maine Department of Transportation will use the money to repair or reconstruct federal-aid highways and roads on federal lands that suffered serious damage as a result of Irene, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. Some of the money will be used to replace two bridges on Route 27 near Carrabassett Valley, which were washed away due to heavy rains and flooding, according to the Sun Journal. Woolwich-based Reed & Reed Inc. has built two temporary bridges to restore traffic flow on Route 27, and could be tapped to build permanent structures if negotiations are successful.

Maine is the third New England state to receive federal emergency funds since Irene struck Aug. 28; Vermont received $5 million and Connecticut received $1 million.
