Westbrook OKs Idexx's expansion plans

Idexx Laboratories' plan for the first phase of its $60 million expansion has earned approval from the city of Westbrook.

The city's planning board yesterday unanimously approved a site plan for a 107,000-square-foot building that will include a fitness center, a food service area and offices for 300 employees, according to the Portland Press Herald. The $30 million building is part of Idexx's expansion of its corporate offices in space next to its existing facility on Eisenhower Drive. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection still must sign off on the plan. If it does, site work will begin this fall, while construction is expected to begin April 2012. A completion date is set for August 2013. A second building to house 400 employees will be built when it becomes necessary, according to the paper.

The company announced its expansion last year, under the condition that it reached a favorable agreement with neighbor Pike Industries over its quarrying activity. An agreement reached last fall limits Pike's blasting.
