Opposition persists against Pike, Idexx pact

Smiling Hill Farm and Artel — neighbors of Pike Industries' quarry operation in Westbrook — again plan to file complaints against an agreement the construction company crafted with Idexx Laboratories.

The American Journal reported that Artel attorney David Bertoni said the company will submit a complaint this week over buffer zones around the quarry.

Warren Knight, owner of Smiling Hill Farm, told the paper that his company is filing a complaint against the latest pact because he wants his company to have a 100-foot vegetative buffer from the quarry, as businesses do to the north and east of his property.

Pike and Idexx have had a long conflict over blasting at the quarry and are awaiting court approval for a consent agreement that the Westbrook City Council approved in a 4-3 vote earlier this month.

Previously, a judge threw out a consent agreement between the two parties because of conflicts with local zoning ordinances.
