Railroad wants to stop bean shipments to B&M

The St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad wants to discontinue its freight service from Auburn to Portland, as the dried bean shipments to the rail spur’s sole customer are losing money.

The Portland Press Herald reported the waterfront factory of B&M Baked Beans has been the rail line’s sole customer for the Auburn-Portland route since 2006. On Nov. 7, the railroad filed a petition with the federal Surface Transportation Board to discontinue service on the 24-mile line, which would make Auburn the end of the line for the tracks connecting to Montreal.

A decision is expected on the request in March. If approved, the discontinuation would still allow the company to resume service if it picks up more customers. Mario Brault, president of the railroad, told the paper that B&M would likely be able to have its beans trucked in either from Auburn or another location.
