USM details major cuts

The University of Southern Maine plans to cut $14 million from its 2014-15 budget by laying off as many as 50 faculty and staff and cutting four majors.

The Portland Press Herald reported USM faces the steepest of the $36 million to be cut across the University of Maine System, despite having a budget more than $100 million less than the system’s flagship campus in Orono, which is expected to cut an estimated $12 million in the coming year.

The newspaper reported that USM President Theodora Kalikow on Friday proposed cutting the school’s American and New England Studies programs, Geosciences and Recreation and Leisure Studies majors at the Portland and Gorham campuses in addition to cutting the Arts and Humanities major at Lewiston-Auburn College.

The newspaper reported the announcement received sharp criticism after its presentation to an overflow meeting of the university’s Faculty Senate.
