Pride Manufacturing, a Burnham-based maker of various wood products, has been chosen to manufacture the historic Lincoln Logs toy.
John Butera, senior economic adviser for Gov. Paul LePage, confirmed to Mainebiz on Wednesday that Pennsylvania-based K’Nex Industries, the toy’s current distributor, awarded a production contract to Pride as part of its effort to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States. The toy distributor had been manufacturing the toy in China.
Once manufacturing efforts have fully transitioned to Maine in 2015, Butera said, Pride will become one of the world's few producers of Lincoln Logs, a toy that was invented in 1916 by John Lloyd Wright, the second son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Butera said Pride’s new contract is expected to support five to 10 new jobs, along with the purchase of new manufacturing equipment.
K’Nex’s move is part of a greater trend by U.S. manufacturers called “reshoring,” the act of returning offshore operations back to the country. As noted by National Public Radio earlier this year, more and more manufacturing companies are bringing jobs back home.
“This is a great partnership because K’Nex was looking for someone with the capacity someone with the expertise and someone with the history in manufacturing, and Pride was able to deliver,” Butera said. “It’s an example of what we can and should be doing.”
