Police on Monday released the names of 21 alleged 'johns' summonsed as part of a prostitution investigation involving a Kennebunk Zumba instructor. That list represents just a portion of the estimated 100 or more people expected to receive summonses in the case.
But those names have come with no other identifying information, causing confusion and distress for people with the same name as any of those charged, according to WCSH6, which published the names Monday night.
The Bangor Daily News, which did not publish the list, reported that one of the summonsed names matches 11 men across the state. Without an address or age — or both details — the BDN, Portland Press Herald and the Journal Tribune have decided to not publish the list, which has been hotly contested over the last week.
Two men — identified only as John Doe No. 1 and John Doe No. 2 in court documents — have filed multiple appeals to prevent the release of the list, which the Press Herald reports could contain more than 150 names that allegedly includes prominent figures.
Alexis Wright, 29, faces 106 counts of prostitution, violation of privacy and 15 related tax crimes that allegedly took place during her time working at the Pura Vida Studio in Kennebunk. Mark W. Strong Sr., owner of a Thomaston insurance company, also faces a charge of promotion of prostitution in the case.
