Somerset County shuttle service to start

A new public transportation service is slated to start in Somerset County by Thanksgiving.

Three days a week, according to the Morning Sentinel, a fixed bus route is planned to connect Skowhegan, Madison and Anson in a project that hopes to expand its reach next year to Kennebec Community College in Fairfield and hospitals and colleges in Waterville and Augusta.

Currently, Skowhegan officials are looking for contributions from businesses, economic development organizations and community service groups in the area to match federal money that will make up the expected $104,000 first-year operating costs.

One-way service on the Somerset Explorer within any of the communities served will cost $1 per trip and travel between towns will cost $1.25 per trip. The public transportation service is modeled on Bar Harbor's Island Explorer.
