$2M awarded to Head Start programs in two counties
Downeast Community Partners has been awarded close to $2 million for its Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Hancock and Washington counties.
“Head Start programs are instrumental in ensuring that young children cultivate new skills and receive educational opportunities,” U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, said in a joint statement on Monday.
“This funding will help build an educational foundation for children in Hancock and Washington counties and provide parents with access to the services they need during their children’s early years,”they added.
Washington Hancock Community Agency and Child and Family Opportunities were formed in 1970 and merged in October 2018 to form Downeast Community Partners. Its mission is to bring community resources together to help people in Washington and Hancock counties achieve self-sufficiency and a better quality of life, as described on its website.
Head Start was established in 1965 to promote school readiness and provide a comprehensive array of health, nutritional, and social services to eligible four- and five-year-old preschoolers and their families.
Head Start services include early learning, health, and family well-being. The funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
