$2M federal grant boosts Brunswick TechPlace
A new initiative led by the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority and Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. will get a more than $2 million in federal grant money to help renovate a former Navy maintenance facility at Brunswick Landing into an advanced manufacturing training center.
Jeffrey Jordan, MRRA’s deputy director, told the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that the redevelopment authority partnered with 15 other agencies to apply for the grant.
The U.S. Department of Commerce said in its announcement that the initiative is one of 10 recipients of funding through the Make it in America Challenge launched late last year.
The department said the grant will help the redevelopment authority renovate Building 250 into TechPlace to house office, shop, laboratory and work space for aerospace, aviation, advanced materials, renewable energy and biotechnology manufacturing. The award comes from a $750,000 grant to MRRA from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and a $1.3 million grant to Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. from the Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.
The new facility will also incorporate a skills training program for career advancement and for unemployed people seeking skills in a new field. Part of the criteria for the DOL grant includes training in areas to reduce the country's reliance on H-1B visas, which allow skilled workers to stay and work in the United States to meet specific work force needs.
