As the city of Portland moves forward with plans for redesigning the Franklin Street arterial, it’s seeking input from the public.
Portland’s Planning & Urban Development Department will host an open house to kick off the Reimagining Franklin Street project on Thursday, April 17, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Portland Public Library.
Attendees can learn about past planning efforts and discuss priorities for the new street design and land use plan.
Franklin Street runs from Commercial Street to 295 and is a major traffic artery through the city.
The redesign effort seeks to refine the concept for the project that was adopted by the city council as part of the 2015 Franklin Street master plan.
This final phase of planning work is needed to update the 2015 feasibility study due to changes in transportation patterns, and planning and design standards, as well as new zoning along and near Franklin Street due to the recent ReCode effort.
The final phase will also address development that has occurred in the area since 2015 as well as new opportunities that are available through the use of federal funds recently awarded to the city and to the Maine Department of Transportation.
Portland has contracted with WSP USA Inc., a national consulting firm, to help complete the planning phase of the project. The planning effort is expected to take 10 months.
