$2M grant to help shellfish industry

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is doling out funding to a handful of Maine municipalities, including nearly $1.9 million to Thomaston to help protect its shellfish industry.

On Friday, USDA Rural Development announced the midcoast town would receive a $1,887,000 grant to improve its wastewater infrastructure to help preserve its shellfish areas, according to a press release from the USDA. The town will contribute $113,000 to the $2 million project. The money will fund upgrading Thomaston's primary sewer lines, which discharge into the St. George and Mill rivers, to protect clamming flats from run-off from sewer overflows and improve the water quality of both rivers.

Rural Development also announced a total of $151,400 in investments for Addison, Rumford and Mars Hill through its Community Facilities Program, which finances public projects in rural areas. Addison's Friends of the Church on the Hill will receive $97,000 to renovate a historic church as a community center; Camden-based LifeFlight Foundation will receive $11,250 to improve access for emergency medical helicopters by building a weather station on the roof of Rumford Hospital; and the Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library in Mars Hill will receive $43,150 for repairs, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
