A $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration will fund water system upgrades at the Loring Commerce Center in Limestone needed to attract more businesses, officials said.
The $1,132,000 investment to the Loring Development Authority will fund repairs and infrastructure upgrades to water distribution and treatment systems, which are necessary to ensure water flow to the center and retain and attract businesses, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. Groundwater contamination at Loring prevents it from being used as drinking water, and an off-site water treatment facility was built in the 1950s. The EDA and the LDA said the project will help retain Loring's more than 1,300 jobs.
The commerce center was established at the site of the former Loring Air Force Base, which closed in 1994, and tenants include aviation firm Telford Group/SAIC, Loring Applied Technology Center and Maine Military Authority, which refurbishes Army National Guard vehicles, among others.
