Significant professional accomplishment: Over 5,000 global business members in our network and $65 million in certified annual giving to environmental nonprofits.
Passion project: So much of my day-to-day work is relational, strategic and left-brained, and I’ve learned over the years how important it is for me to seek balance in creativity. Lately, that’s come in the form of painting, printmaking and intuitive leadership coaching, but over the years I’ve had a floral design studio, created natural foraged skincare, taught yoga retreats, and designed events and spaces.
Audacious goal: The ultimate vision is that all businesses participate in giving back to our planet. Everyone has a 1%, whether it’s monetary, volunteer time or in-kind. In many ways, what we do at 1% for the Planet is not philanthropy but, rather, offers accountability for the use of natural resources. It’s part of the cost of doing business; you pay your employees, you pay your rent, and part of your overhead is the cost of the use of our planet. It’s simple, and yet, it’s also big and audacious. 1% adds up to truly meaningful impact.
Favorite quote: “A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. They experience their selves, their thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” — Albert Einstein [modified with inclusive gender pronoun]
Influential book: “The Way of Integrity,” by Martha Beck
Favorite TV show: “Ted Lasso” (all of my leadership intel comes from this show).
How do you recharge: Meditation, a quiet walk along the coast with my pup, traveling to a new destination to expand my viewpoint, or a beautiful home-cooked meal with friends.
