Significant professional accomplishment: Starting and sustaining a business in a field that didn’t exist in Maine when I moved here, and supporting other music therapists as they moved here to build programs as well. I founded Maine Music and Health in 2011 because there were no music therapy jobs when I finished grad school and wanted to move back to my home state. It took years of advocacy work and demonstrating success to build the program it is today, and now we have dozens of music therapists in Maine. Seeing music therapy services grow at Maine Medical Center has been wonderful, as well; it’s still a small part of my practice, but this January I’ll have been there 10 years.
Audacious goal: To build a music therapy program at a local university that teaches students (in music, nursing, education, psychology) skills in music and health while benefiting the community.
Passion project: I feel lucky that my career has been my passion project, but I also have a strong interest in environmental and animal health. I have been trying to find ways to collaborate with my brother, who records and studies soundscapes to learn about the health impacts of noise. We both serve on the American Public Health Association’s Noise and Health Committee.
