$4M in transit funds coming to eastern Maine
Two Maine transportation projects, including improvements to the welcome center at Acadia National Park, are set to receive $4 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration.
In an announcement Monday, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said that the Maine Department of Transportation will dedicate roughly $3 million of those funds to make improvements to the Acadia Gateway Welcome Center and an intermodal passenger facility in Trenton.
The remaining $1 million will help fund the design of a ferry to replace the vessel, the Margaret Chase Smith, which serves Isleboro via Lincolnville.
In her announcement, Collins said that the funding will encourage use of Acadia's Island Explorer bus system, which is free for visitors during the summer, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion in the park.
The Bangor Daily News reported that work at the Acadia Gateway Welcome Center will include adding 320 additional parking spaces for passenger vehicles, 10 spaces for larger recreational vehicles, a building with public restrooms and a welcome center where Chamber of Commerce organizations can provide information about businesses and attractions outside of the park.
