Falmouth joins natural gas study
Falmouth officials on Monday approved spending up to $15,000 to study options for linking the town to the Maritimes & Northeast natural gas pipeline, a move that proponents say will cut energy bills by 30% to 50% for residential and commercial customers.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the unanimous vote Monday by the Falmouth Town Council follows approval of similar study funds in Cumberland and Yarmouth. Altogether, the three towns will spend up to $45,000 – at $15,000 each – to investigate ways to tap into the natural gas pipeline that runs through West Cumberland.
Falmouth Town Manager Nathan Poore told the Press Herald that the project cost is estimated at $8 million to $10 million and Cumberland Town Manager Bill Shane said that officials have already met with representatives from the Colorado-based Summit Utilities, which is appealing a rival's award for pipeline work in Kennebec County.
Meetings with representatives from Maine Natural Gas and Unitil are scheduled for next week.
