$4M waterfront expansion could help bring Belfast ferry-building jobs

Front Street Shipyard’s construction of a new 21,700-square-foot building on Belfast’s waterfront could help the shipbuilder land a major contract to build ferries for New York City, and bring more jobs to the Waldo County city.

The Bangor Daily News reported that New York is looking to add 18 ferries to its fleet as part of a larger effort to free traffic from its busy streets.

San Francisco-based Hornblower Inc. was chosen to lead the construction efforts in March and Front Street is vying to construct two of the 84-foot ferries in the $4 million building. Front Street hopes to start construction on the building by next April.

JB Turner, the shipyard’s president, told the BDN that Front Street would likely have to hire between 30 and 40 employees if it lands the ferry contract.

“It goes beyond the number of jobs they’ve created,” Belfast City Planner Wayne Marshall told the BDN. “The shipyard has had a transformative impact on the waterfront.”

A. Building 5: 5 stories tall, 22,000 square feet, large enough for repair and refitting boats of up to 120 feet long.

B. Building 6: 5 stories tall, 21,700 square feet, large enough for boats of up to 150 feet long.

C. Buildings 2, 3, 4: Building 4 is the only building preserved from the former Stinson site. It's used for working on smaller boats. Connected buildings provide work areas for metal fabrication, pipefitting, welding and woodworking.

D. Building 1: 15,600 square feet. Storage and painting of boats, but also facilities for boaters who are renting space in the marina and includes a laundry room, showers and a lounge with free wi-fi.

E. Marina: 46 slips with 400 feet of transient dockage.
