Five airports in Maine's Second Congressional District, including the state's second largest airport, will share more than $2.6 million in federal funding announced this week.

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine 2nd District, helped pass the funding through the House earlier this year through the $1.5 billion omnibus spending bill, formally known as the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2022, which President Joseph Biden signed into law in March.

Funding will include $300,000 for Bangor International Airport, Maine's second-largest airport after the Portland International Jetport.

“I’m happy to see Maine airports getting the funding they need to make safety upgrades and important improvements in infrastructure,” Golden said.

“Crucially, these grants aren’t just going to larger airports like Bangor and Presque Isle, but also smaller municipal facilities serving very rural areas, like Princeton and Eastport. We need to see more investments like these in rural communities across our state," he added.

List of funding amounts and recipients

  • Eastport Municipal Airport, $136,375, for a runway vertical/visual guidance system;
  • Presque Isle International Airport, $298,000, for runway repairs;
  • Presque Isle International Airport, $673,752, for aircraft rescue and fire fighting safety equipment, the construction of a taxi lane, and the reconstruction of perimeter fencing;
  • Bangor International Airport, $300,000, for runway rehabilitation;
  • Hancock County/Bar Harbor Airport, $650,000, for improvements to drainage systems and erosion control; and
  • Princeton Municipal Airport, $60,000, for paving.
