$5M to fund offshore wind risk research

BioDiversity Research Institute in Gorham and Stantec in Topsham are receiving a total of a little more than $5 million from the U.S. government to study offshore wind's potential impact on wildlife.

BioDiversity specializes in ecological research with programs in wetlands, waterfowl, migratory birds and wildlife and renewable energy, according to its website. Its research is used to guide policy decisions that conserve resources and protect the environment. The $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will fund research to the risks that offshore wind power poses to sea birds, sea turtles and marine mammals, according to The Associated Press. U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe said the data will help develop offshore wind resources.

In addition, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree said the Topsham office of Canadian engineering firm Stantec is getting $600,000 to develop new technology to monitor bird and bat activity around proposed offshore wind developments.
