Roxanne Quimby has added another 965 acres of forestland to her northern Maine land holdings.
Through her foundation, Elliotsville Plantation, Quimby bought the property east of the Appalachian Trail in Elliotsville Township for an undisclosed price, according to The Associated Press. The land is along the Little and Big Wilson streams, and the foundation plans to maintain it for low-impact recreational uses. Quimby, founder of personal care company Burt's Bees, now owns and manages more than 100,000 acres of land in Maine. Earlier this year, she bought a 13.8-acre wilderness sporting facility in Stacyville for an undisclosed amount, with plans to use it for recreational and artistic activities. And in March, the state finalized a deal with Quimby in which it bought more than 5,000 acres north of Millinocket Lake, and obtained conservation easements on another nearly 3,000 acres near Baxter State Park, for a total of $2.6 million.
Quimby's proposal to establish a national park in northern Maine has caused tension in the region. Millinocket town officials, the Maine Legislature and recreational groups like the Maine Snowmobile Association oppose her plan, while the area chamber and a downtown business group support it, according to the Bangor Daily News. Quimby hopes to make a gift in 2016 of 70,000 acres she owns next to Baxter State Park to the federal government for the new park.
