$5M to train 300 unemployed in Brunswick

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded nearly $5 million to Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. in Brunswick to be used to train 300 long-term unemployed people.

Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. will partner with employers at Brunswick Landing, including Kestrel Aircraft, security firm Resilient Tier-V and Molnlycke Health Care to provide on-the-job and classroom training for people unemployed for more than six months, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Other organizations, including the Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber of Commerce, Southern Maine Community College and the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, will assist in training and placing the participants in new jobs.

The funding comes from the DOL's H-1B technical skills training grant program, which provides skills training and job placement assistance for industries currently relying on foreign workers. The grants come from fees paid by employers to bring foreign workers into the United States, and are intended to raise the technical skill levels of American workers and help businesses reduce their use of the H-1B visa program, according to the release.
