Two projects in northern Maine have received a total of $250,000 from the Northern Border Regional Commission, a multi-state organization charged with boosting development along the rural border regions of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
The town of Van Buren is receiving $200,000 to fund the construction of a vegetable processing plant that will be leased to Northern Girl LLC, which will supply products for distribution to Crown of Maine Organic Cooperative, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. The plant will expand markets for local food producers, according to the release. Additionally, the Northern Maine Finance Corp. in Caribou will receive $50,000 to establish a public-private partnership to link entrepreneurs in Aroostook and Washington counties with investors to help grow their businesses. The project will be piloted in Caribou, using NBRC funds, and will be expanded through a combination of private and public support from local communities.
The commission in August sought applications for projects from the four states hoping to receive a portion of $1.25 million. Last year, the commission doled out $1.3 million in seven grants in the region, including $250,000 for an expansion of the Port of Eastport.
