60 new jobs for Waterville

Waterville has been chosen as the site of a $10 million early childhood education center, the first of its kind in New England.

First Lady Karen Baldacci yesterday announced that Waterville edged out Portland, Bangor and Lewiston to host the Educare Center, which will serve 166 children from newborn to age five, mostly from low-income families, according to the Kennebec Journal. The center already has attracted approximately $5 million in private contributions, including $3 million from Doris Buffet, sister of billionaire investor Warren Buffett, and $2 million from local philanthropists Bill and Joan Alfond. The center, which is still seeking $4 million in contributions, will create more than 60 jobs for educators and child-development staff.

The center will be built next to George J. Mitchell School and is slated to be complete Labor Day 2010, according to the paper.
