BIW receives $83M contract

The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works an $83.4 million contract modification to oversee the maintenance and modernization of DDG-51 class destroyers and FFG-7 class frigates.

The contract modification joins contracts contained in the fiscal year 2009 Defense Appropriations Bill that the U.S. Senate approved last weekend. That bill includes $1.5 billion for BIW to start building a third DDG-1000, with another $1 billion expected in 2010. The bill also includes $200 million in advanced procurement for funding to preserve the option to restart the DDG-51 destroyer program, the DDG-1000's predecessor.

BIW is currently building one of the first two DDG-1000 ships, with the second being built at Northrop Grumman's Ingalls Operations in Pascagoula, Miss.
