An $8.5 million federal grant will help launch a new insurance initiative through the state's health insurance program, Dirigo Health.
Dirigo officials told the Legislature's appropriations committee yesterday the grant will be directed to a new program that will insure part-time employees of businesses with 50 or more full-time workers, according to the Sun Journal. Eligible workers who are under 300% of the poverty line would receive a voucher that would allow them to purchase their employer's health insurance. The grant is renewable for up to five years and is expected to serve 3,500 uninsured part-time, seasonal and direct care workers, according to the Kennebec Journal.
In related news, Dirigo officials reassured lawmakers the agency would be able to pay back a $25 million loan granted to it from the state's General Fund. Karynlee Harrington, the agency's executive director, said in December it might not be able to meet the terms of the loan, but then said it would be able to pay it back.
