Cianbro to cut Brewer staff to 100

Cianbro Corp. is planning to let go some of its workers as it finishes up a major oil refinery project in the upcoming months.

Hundreds will be laid off in April unless the Pittsfield-based company can dig up a new contract for its Eastern Manufacturing Facility in Brewer, according to the Bangor Daily News. Many of Cianbro's displaced workers will be offered other jobs in the company within the next three or four weeks when construction projects are solidified under contract, Andi Vigue, the company's president, told the paper. But not everyone is promised a job. Vigue says there will be some temporary layoffs as the company currently does not have enough available positions to offer its nearly 500 employees at the Brewer plant.

Texas-based Motiva Enterprises LLC hired Cianbro to build 50 refinery modules for the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery in Texas, which is in the midst of a $7 billion expansion. In December, with the Motiva project halfway finished, Cianbro cut nine workers. More are being laid off every week since, and the company is expected to cut its staff at the Brewer facility to 100 by June, Alan Burton, vice president of human resources, safety and health, told the paper.
