The newly launched Brewer-based Mason’s Brewing Co. prepared for its first batch of beer not with a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony, but with a blessing from Brother Don of the Franciscan Brothers of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
But Brother Don isn’t just a run-of-the-mill Franciscan friar — he’s also a fellow brewer at the Bucksport-based Friars’ Brewhouse, according to the Bangor Daily News.
“Keep us humble to our calling,” Brother Don said as part of his blessing, according to the BDN. “Remind us that our craft is dedicated to using the elements of your creations to construct a new creature — beer. And may our labors serve to bring joy to all and glory to you. Amen.”
Owner and home brewer Christopher Morley told the BDN that an opening date within the next two weeks is likely. Ahead of the grand opening, the brewery is already advertising several brews on its Facebook page, including a mocha stout, an American IPA and Roggenbier — a rye brew that dates back to medieval Germany.
