In the issue of March 24, 2008, Mainebiz honored as a Business Leader of the Year Ford Reiche, founder of Auburn-based Safe Handling, a logistics and transportation company since acquired by Savage Handling Inc. But one thing that caught our eye was a speedboat record he broke in August 2007. He and Jonathan Knowles, owner of East Coast Yacht sales in Yarmouth, raced 408 miles in 11 hours, from Portland to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
“He doesn’t shoot from the hip and he’s been consistent with that his whole life,” Knowles told Mainebiz in 2008. “When he gets into a project he’s really focused on it, he gets really wrapped up in it. He’s very meticulous and methodical. And it has paid off in spades for him.”
Fun Fact: In the Mainebiz of June 9, 2003, we reported that lobster topped the list of Maine commercial fishery landings, as ranked by value in dollars. In 2002, the lobster catch was 62.3 million pounds, with a value of $207.3 million. By comparison, 119.6 million pounds of lobster were landed in 2018, with a value of $484.5 million.
