The Oct. 13, 2003, issue of Mainebiz features a two-page spread by a rookie real estate agent — known here by the byline “Always B. Closing.” The agent figures it’s been a pretty good year so far. It starts with an acquaintance saying, “Hey, you’re in real estate — let’s do a deal.” The year continues at a blistering pace. “My sense is the market’s still totally beaming,” the agent writes. Everything’s great till the agent is in a house that potential buyers love. They’re with the home inspector, who discovers mold: “It’s not just mildew — it’s the bad mold,” the agent recalls. “I’m like, ‘We’re done — this is over.” Alas, the buyers rebound from their initial shock, and vow to find a “solution.” The column ends with the deal getting signed. The booming year continues.
Fun Fact: Portland’s iconic Time & Temperature Building was sold in 2003 for $9.5 million, as reported in the Oct. 13 Mainebiz of that year. Fast forward 15 years, to October 2018, when the Time & Temperature Building sold at auction for a reported $9.3 million.
