A prominent Portland chef says he'll take a ‘little break,' citing need for change

dinners and chef File Photo / Renee Cordes Chef Matt Ginn chats with diners during a pre-opening meal last spring at the Good Table restaurant in Cape Elizabeth.

Matt Ginn, a noted Portland-area chef with the Prentice Hospitality Group, is taking a career break to spend time with family and chart his next professional chapter.

“After 10 years it is time for a change,” Ginn said in an Instagram post announcing his departure from Evo Kitchen + Bar and Twelve, both in Portland, the Chebeague Island Inn and the Good Table in Cape Elizabeth.

When the Prentice Organization bought the Good Table in 2024 from the restaurant's original family owners, Ginn crafted a menu of elegant comfort food.

“I am grateful to the group and ownership, and my colleagues and coworkers for all the opportunities these properties have given me,” Ginn told his 3,387 followers on Instagram.

“I am proud of what we have accomplished in the hospitality industry on many levels,” added Ginn, who grew up in Cape Elizabeth. “Professionally, we achieved a number of goals I had hoped to accomplish.”

Without spelling out what he plans to do next, Ginn said he looks forward to new challenges and a “little break" with his family.

The post sparked close to 150 replies in three days, with one fan commenting that "we will follow you anywhere" and another praising Ginn's "immeasurable" impact on the Portland culinary community.

Casey Prentice CEO and managing partner of the Prentice Organization, told Mainebiz that Ginn will be missed.

“After an incredible decade of collaboration, I’m proud to support Matt as he begins his next chapter,” Prentice said. "More than a colleague, Matt has been like family, and his impact on Prentice Hospitality Group and our shared journey has been immeasurable. While it’s bittersweet to see him move on, I’m excited to cheer him on and wish him nothing but continued success in the future.”

Prentice was honored as a Mainebiz 40 Under 40 in 2023.
