BioME, the Bioscience Association of Maine, is bringing together representatives of businesses in Maine that have taken the lead in the medical aspect of fighting the COVID-19 virus in free webinar Thursday.
“The Science of COVID-19," panel includes Edison Liu, president and CEO of Jackson Laboratory; Norman Moore, director of scientific affairs at Abbott Diagnostics, of Scarborough; Dora Anne Mills, the chief health improvement officer for MaineHealth; and Melissa Maginnis, an assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Maine. Douglas Sawyer, of the Maine Medical Center Research Institute, is the moderator.
The panelists represent many of the businesses and entities in Maine that have responded to the virus outbreak with research, testing, supply chain, manufacturing and therapeutic development solutions.
“We wanted to bring some of these people together to provide the public and Maine’s bioscience community a chance to understand COVID-19 from a scientific perspective," said Agnieszka Carpenter, executive director of BioME.
Discussion is expected to focus on the specifics of the virus and the disease it causes, research progress, testing, possible vaccines and treatment, epidemiology and virology in general.
Jackson Laboratory, in collaboration with several Maine hospitals, is providing coronavirus testing for front line health care workers and patients in Maine. Abbott, of Scarborough, is manufacturing rapid tests for the virus, after being granted emergency approval by the Food and Drug Administration in April to manufacture the tests. The two companies are among a number of Maine bioscience businesses that have shifted to the COVID-19 response.
Maginnis is on the University of Maine System Scientific Advisory Board for COVID-19 and is co-chair of of the American Society for Virology Education and Career Development Committee. Mills, who was Maine CDC director during the Baldacci and King administrations, is leading the state's largest health care system's response to the virus. Sawyer, the moderator, is interim director of the Maine Medical Center Research Institute and co-director of the Myocardial Biology and Heart Failure Research Lab.
BioME promotes growth and development of Maine’s life science industry and serves its members and bioscience community by providing a network for public policy, industry advocacy and economic development.
