Employers with 50 to 99 workers will have another year before they must offer health insurance to most of their full-time workers after the Treasury Department announced on Monday new rules for implementing the Affordable Care Act.
The Washington Post reported that those medium-sized employers will have until 2016 before they face a penalty for not offering coverage. The Obama administration also relaxed requirements for large companies, with 100 workers or more. Under earlier rules, those companies would have been required to offer insurance to 95% of their full-time workers in 2015. The new rules allow them to avoid a fine by offering insurance to just 70% of full-time employees next year.
Employers with fewer than 50 workers are not required to offer insurance but can instead buy health plans through an online marketplace set to open in the fall.
