Federal health officials have launched an investigation into working conditions at The Acadia Hospital in Bangor.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration on July 26 opened an investigation of the psychiatric hospital's high rate of employee injuries, triggered by a complaint from an employee, according to the Bangor Daily News. Katie Gardner, a nurse at the hospital, did not file the complaint but told the paper that changes in patient care policies, understaffing and inadequate training related to cost-cutting measures have led to several injuries in recent months. Hospital spokesman William Comeau told the paper the hospital is cooperating fully with OSHA's investigation and has already begun pairing less experienced employees with more experienced colleagues to reduce the chance of injury.
The Acadia Hospital, an affiliate of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, has about 600 employees and is licensed for 100 inpatient beds. The facility was the first psychiatric hospital in the country to be designated a magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a status that denotes excellence in nursing care.
