Acadia park visits top 2.5M

More than 2.5 million people visited Acadia National Park in 2010, a five-year high, according to park officials.

The park's estimated number of visitors climbed 14% over 2009, which has also risen over 2008, according to the Bangor Daily News. The park's attendance hasn't topped 2.5 million people since 2005. Park superintendent Sheridan Steele said he expects visitors to increase in 2011 as well. The park also saw an increase in riders on its Island Explorer bus system, which carried 412,000 people in 2010, up 45,000 from 2009.

Congress has yet to approve Acadia National Park's 2010-201 budget, however. It is currently operating under a continuing resolution that froze expenditures at last year's levels and is expected to last at least another month. If it extends into the summer season, it could affect the park's ability to hire summer staff, according to the paper.
