New company to lead broadband project

A new company has been formed to lead a broadband expansion plan known as the Three Ring Binder project.

The Maine Fiber Co. will oversee the construction, maintenance and leasing of the 1,100-mile network to increase broadband access in rural Maine, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The project received $25 million in federal stimulus funds in November, and private investors are giving Maine Fiber Co. another $7 million for the project, the company's CEO Dwight Allison told MPBN. Construction of the fiber-optic network is slated to begin this spring. Robert CS Monks, a well-known real estate developer and entrepreneur, is a partner and investor in the project.

The project is expected to provide broadband access to 110,000 households in 100 rural communities.
