The buyer is Tim Harrington, a hotelier, real estate developer and entrepreneur who acquired the Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor in 2020 and Salt Cottages in the Bar Harbor village of Hulls Cove in 2021. He picked up the Asticou Inn and Restaurant in neighboring Northeast Harbor in 2023 as part of his growing Acadia collection.

Harrington, honored as a Mainebiz Business Leader of the Year in 2023, owns Atlantic Hospitality, a real estate development and management company. Atlantic Holdings also includes Batson River Brewing & Distilling.

Renovations and additions

The Asticou, at 15 Peabody Drive, dates to 1884 and was reconstructed in 1901. The recent renovation preserved the original structure and paid homage to its historic roots, according to a news release. Its 82 rooms on nearly 25 acres include 50 renovated guest rooms and suites inside the original inn, as well as the addition of 15 harborside cottages and 17 harbor-view spa suites with terraces.

The project brought in “modern comforts,” said Harrington.

The project included custom furnishings and fixtures.

The tradition of lodging at property dates back to 1870, when the Savage family began housing boarders. After being operated by the Savage family for three generations, the hotel was purchased in 1965 by the Asti-Kim Corp., a group of local businesspeople and summer residents looking to preserve the property for the future.

The property is a mile from downtown of Northeast Harbor and across the street from the Asticou Azalea Garden, which was also established by the Savage family and is home to gardens that include the natural local features combined with inspiration from Japanese gardens.

The property’s amenities will include a heated pool, poolside bar and grille, spa and fitness center. Dining options will include a restaurant and a cabana bar by the pool. Programming will include activities such as yoga, art classes, stargazing, guided hikes, and boat charters offered through the Asticou’s sister property, the Claremont. EV charging stations will be available.

Custom wallpaper

The project was led by Atlantic Hospitality’s in-house designers, Krista Stokes and Mark Cotto, who chose a nature-inspired palette such as bark, moss, slate, oyster and "lady slipper" pink.

The project added 15 harborside cottages, such as this one, and 17 harbor-view spa suites with terraces.

The public spaces will showcase a custom toile wallpaper featuring artwork by David Allen, drawing inspiration from Martha Stewart’s Skylands estate and gardens in nearby Seal Harbor. Other brands include Antoinette Poisson, Devine Savages and a design center called Mind the Gap. Most of the furniture and fixtures are being custom-designed or will be vintage-sourced finds from along the Eastern seaboard.

The design blends old European elegance with early American charm, said Stokes, Atlantic Hospitality’s director of design and brand.

Atlantic Hospitality is a hotel investment, management and design company whose portfolio spans glamping tents and oceanfront properties. Its properties include the Claremont, Salt Cottages, the Lincoln Hotel in Biddeford, the Wanderer in Kennebunkport, Sandy Pines Campground in Kennebunkport and the Dunes in Ogunquit.
