After 37 years in business, the owners of the Good Table Restaurant in Cape Elizabeth have agreed to sell the iconic eatery to unnamed local buyers.
"It was a decision we have tossed back and forth for many years, one of us or two or all three of us would balk and say, 'No, not time," Lisa Kostopoulos, one of three owners, said in a Facebook post marking the "end of an era."
"Well, we finally got three cherries in a row, we collectively decided it was time," she said. "We are currently under contract with the first people that saw the restaurant, local people and a fine chef indeed. We aren’t able to tell more details yet. But we plan to be here through strawberry season and into blueberry season, but alas, we’ll be gone before apple season."
Kostopoulos also noted that the eatery will stop selling gift certificates, and urged customers to use any in their possession before it's too late.
"These next few months will be a long, slow goodbye to the best coworkers and family," she added. "Sorry for the shock, but hasn't it been grand?"
The restaurant, whose menu features oversized cinnamon buns and other hearty breakfast fare, comfort-food dinners and seasonal fruit pies, has been under the same ownership since opening in 1986.
"With no advertising, our first day open was Sunday brunch," according to a blurb on the restaurant’s website. "Every friend, neighbor and family member was put to work at day. It was a busy first day."
The business has had its ups and downs over the years, rebuilding after a 2001 fire that destroyed the previous structure and reopening in less than seven months.
"Through thick and thin this place has always brought us happiness and we have maintained the original premise of opening a restaurant, which is to throw a good dinner party," according to the website.
Hundreds of Facebook followers responded to the surprise announcement about the decision to sell with an outpouring of gratitude and good wishes.
