Less than two weeks after abandoning its proposal to build a land-based salmon farm in Belfast, Nordic Aquafarms Inc. has listed its 53.9-acre property with a real estate firm for $2 million.
Located at 285 Northport Ave., the major development site was previously permitted for up to 807,254 square feet of industrial space. The Porta & Co. listing touts ocean views, U.S. Route 1 frontage and zoning that allows for residential, hospitality and industrial uses.
The site was the original location of the Belfast Water District and includes two garages and a brick building.
Nordic Aquafarms arrived in Belfast in January 2018 with a proposal to build a land-based salmon farm in two phases, with annual production capacity at full buildout of 66 million pounds, along with hatcheries and fish processing facilities.
In 2018, the company said it expected to invest $150 million in the first phase of the project.
The project was fully permitted in 2021, and Nordic bought the property from the Belfast Water District.
That year, the Belfast City Council voted to seize a stretch of mudflat that was the subject of a title dispute, in a bid to advance Nordic’s proposal, allowing the company to run intake and discharge pipes from the facility to Belfast Bay
Opponents of the project, including two local organizations, Upstream Watch and Friends of Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area, challenged the legality of the seizure.
A Maine Superior Court decision subsequently ruled in the city’s favor. But in 2024, the council vacated its eminent domain action, leaving Nordic without the intertidal land needed for the project.
