AG could investigate potential campaign fraud

Potential Clean Election fraud in the campaign of former gubernatorial candidate John Richardson could come under investigation by the state's attorney general.

The Maine Ethics Commission yesterday passed its findings that some of his campaign workers allegedly submitted falsified documents for Clean Election contributions to the Attorney General's Office for possible investigation, according to the Bangor Daily News. The commission last week denied Richardson's request for public funding because of the potential fraud, and Richardson dropped out of the race Monday. The AG's office did not comment on the case.

The ethics commission found that the Richardson campaign failed to meet three of the 10 criteria to qualify for Clean Election funds, including the failure to obtain the required 3,250 forms voters must sign when they give $5 contributions. Of the 3,597 contributions submitted, the commission accepted only 3,168.
