AG Mills appeals Riverview funding decision

The state has appealed a federal decision that stands to cost the Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta $20 million in annual Medicare funding.

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported Attorney General Janet Mills believes the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services erred in its administrative ruling that Riverview did not meet requirements for continued Medicare funding. In the appeal, Mills argued that federal regulations do not require complete separation of all staff, equipment, record and medication between certified portions of the hospital and the non-certified portion of the hospital.

The loss of federal funding stands to cut more than half of the hospital’s $36 million annual operating budget.
