The state's attorney general and developer Plum Creek Timber Co. are appealing a Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruling that overturned state approval of Plum Creek's massive planned development in the Moosehead Lake region.
Attorney General William Schneider and Plum Creek have both filed appeals of last week's ruling, which found the Land Use Regulation Commission broke its own rules in approving the development in September 2009 by not allowing a public hearing on the final version of the application, according to The Associated Press. The judge sent Plum Creek's proposal back to LURC for consideration. A Plum Creek spokesman told the news service that the process allowed adequate time for public comments. Gov. Paul LePage supports the appeals, which will likely take about a year to resolve.
Seattle-based Plum Creek's project includes more than 1,000 housing units, two resorts with more than 1,000 units and nearly 400,000 acres of conserved land. Last week's ruling favored three environmental groups opposed to the project.
