LePage spokesman Demeritt resigns

Dan Demeritt has resigned as Gov. Paul LePage's director of communications following reports that five properties he owns are facing foreclosure.

Demeritt cited "several unresolved business issues" as his reason for stepping down Saturday, according to a press release from the governor's office. On Friday, the Kennebec Journal reported that Savings Bank of Maine is seeking foreclosure judgments against Demeritt for four rental properties he owns in the Augusta area, as well as his Pizza Connection restaurant in Augusta. One of the apartment buildings was destroyed by arson on April 9, but police have yet to file charges in the case. Demeritt owes nearly $500,000 in unpaid principal, interest, late charges and other payments to the bank. Demeritt said the economy has affected sales at his restaurant and impacted his ability to fill rental units, and told the paper he is working with the bank to address the problems.

LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett declined to release more information on the resignation or say who would replace Demeritt.
