Agency vies for BNAS housing

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority has submitted a bid to buy all of the 702 military housing units that will be vacated by the closing of the Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The nonprofit agency, which is overseeing the commercial reuse of the base, made a confidential offer on the property to Pennsylvania-based owner Balfour Beatty Communities, according to a press release from the agency. The bid covers eight developments, including 110 units on the base and 592 off of it, according to the Portland Press Herald. MRRA's goal of redeveloping BNAS and restoring employment and economic activity in the area "is best achieved by the maintenance of housing market stability in the larger Brunswick/Topsham community, a condition which could be adversely affected by the sale of the portfolio to a purchaser who is simply motivated by the maximization of real estate proceeds from the portfolio," said MRRA Executive Director Steve Levesque. Balfour purchased the properties last year.

MRRA's plans for the properties include demolishing hundreds of older housing units, selling the units in stages to avoid overwhelming the housing market, and setting aside housing for prospective BNAS employers as workforce development incentives, according to the press release. Balfour Beatty Communities told the Press Herald that it received other bids for the properties and that the decision will take several months.
