Saco train station opens today

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Saco's long-awaited, $2.2 million train station is scheduled for today.

The station for Amtrak's Downeaster train is powered by a 100-foot wind turbine, heated and cooled by a 1,200-foot well and benefits from passive solar design, according to the Portland Press Herald. Officials from Saco will attend the ceremony today at the station, which is located near the Saco Island mills and between the downtowns of Biddeford and Saco. The station will be open to travelers in about two weeks, when the Biddeford-Saco Chamber of Commerce moves into its offices there.

In 2008, Downeaster ridership in Saco was up 50.4% over the previous year, and area businesses and officials anticipate the train station, which replaces an unprotected passenger shelter, will increase Biddeford and Saco tourism, the paper reported.
