Aging Mainers aren’t alone in working longer
Maine’s aging workforce can be viewed a selling point or a drawback, depending on the perspective.
Yet nationwide workers over 50 are making up a greater share of the U.S. labor force: 33.4%, up from 25% in 2002, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. More than 60% of workers age 65 or older hold full-time jobs, compared to just 44% in 1995.
The Journal’s story cites several factors: baby boomers are better educated than their predecessors; employers are more willing to hire someone who has taken a break from work; and studies have shown “little to no relationship between age and job performance.”
Older workers are also making their mark as entrepreneurs. The Journal story cited research showing businesses launched by people over 50 are more likely to survive.
