Two engineering firms with a presence in Greater Portland said the expansion of their teams will help to expand their markets.
At SMRT Architects & Engineers, Maine's largest architecture firm, Nick Hadiaris will become government and civic market sector leader, based in the Portland office.
A Maine native and a graduate of the University of Maine’s civil engineering program, Hadiaris has over two decades of industry experience along the East Coast, working on civic and federal projects from community libraries to complex renovations at the Pentagon.
“I love being a part of the design process for public projects,” said Hadiaris. “Everything from a local fire station to a command headquarters facility for our U.S. military — these are projects that make a tangible impact for our communities and our country.”
SMRT works across the federal, state and civic sectors, with clients that include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, federally funded research and development centers and state, county and municipal clients.
SMRT said it expects to expand that market under Hadiaris’s leadership.
“Nick's experience and expertise nicely complement SMRT’s government and civic portfolio and our growth goals over the coming years,” said Graham Vickers, the company’s senior principal-in-charge of marketing.
SMRT is Maine's largest architecture firm, with 26 licensed architects and 95 overall employees, according to the 2025 Mainebiz Book of Lists. The firm was founded in 1884 by noted Portland architect John Calvin Stevens and, a century later through a merger in 1985, what had been known as Stevens Architects became Stevens Morton Rose Thompson.
LeMessurier, a Boston firm with a South Portland office, said it hired Keith Brenner as an associate and Matthew McGinnis as a building information technology coordinator at its Maine office to strengthen its presence in the region.
The structural and enclosure engineering firm, established in 1951 and headquartered in Boston, has executed projects from Boston to Beijing.
Brenner is a structural engineer with nearly four decades of experience designing complex building structures across a wide range of sectors, including aviation, commercial offices, laboratories, higher education, retail, industrial and government facilities.
His expertise spans all major building materials, including steel, concrete, wood and masonry. His portfolio includes work with the University of Southern Maine, Maine Health, Boston White Stadium, Harvard American Repertory Theater, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.
McGinnis brings over 25 years of structural design and drafting experience to LeMessurier, with a career rooted in serving clients across Maine.
“Their expertise and strong regional ties enhance our team and reinforce our commitment to delivering high-performance engineering solutions across New England,” said Bill Lovallo, the company’s managing principal.
